Giving to Vice-Chancellor's 2011 Appeal

In 2009 and 2010, with the generous support of our alumni we were able to raise funds to offer 30 new scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds to study at UNSW. All 30 students are now studying at UNSW and are most grateful to alumni who have supported them through scholarships.

The Vice-Chancellor’s 2011 Alumni Scholarship Appeal seeks the support of its alumni community and friends to provide financial assistance to disadvantaged students. These students are from low socio-economic backgrounds and include rural students, Indigenous Australians, students with disabilities and students enduring hardship. A scholarship of $5,000 per year, for the duration of a student’s degree, assists students in need to meet some of the expenses of fees, text books, travel, computer expenses, living expenses, and accommodation.

"As an ESL student, I am disadvantaged in my writing and reading in English, thus I require more time for my studies. The scholarship that I am receiving does not just solve my financial difficulty. It also provides me an environment where I do not have to worry about my financial problems and focus on my studies. Consequently, I have achieved good academic results. For this reason I have appreciated those who have donated this scholarship. Receiving the scholarship is a kind of reward for my past work and also drives me to succeed in my studies."

A SPECIAL CASE IN 2011

To mark the 40th Anniversary of the Law Faculty, the 2011 Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Appeal is also seeking to raise funds for a new scholarship for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The 40th Anniversary scholarship is being created in memory of a Cabramatta street kid who believed in the transformative power of education - someone who should have had this kind of scholarship opportunity - Ngoc Tram Nguyen (pronounced ‘Nyok Tram Noo-when’).

But it was not to be. Tram died before she was able to fulfill her promise. This Scholarship will allow another disadvantaged young person to achieve their potential at UNSW Law School.

The importance of an opportunity to study at UNSW is expressed in Tram Nguyen’s words: “I used to think I didn’t have a future, but now that I have had more opportunities and a lot of support I think I can achieve anything I want.”
