Giving to Students

The student experience at UNSW ensures a learning and teaching environment that provides exposure to teaching excellence, outstanding research opportunities, a vibrant campus life, international engagement and infrastructure and services to address students' educational, personal, financial and career needs.

ASPIRE Program

ASPIRE is a UNSW equity initiative that works in partnership with disadvantaged schools to lift student aspirations. Through work in schools and visits to the UNSW campus, the project enhances students awareness of university among students who may not have considered a university education before. It also works to support student attainment and help school students to achieve their full potential. ASPIRE also gives UNSW students the opportunity to volunteer in the community and develop their own skills as ASPIRE Ambassadors.

Nura Gili Indigenous Programs

Nura Gili provides pathways to learning opportunities that embrace Indigenous knowledge, culture and histories. The Centre recruits Indigenous high school students with potential and provides them with aspirational and informative programs such as The Winter School at Nura Gili. This program provides pre-programs in Medicine, Law, Engineering, Social Work and Business, offering guidance to students who are away from home and their communities for the first time, and introducing them to the skills needed to succeed in undertaking tertiary studies. For currently enrolled Indigenous students Nura Gili provides: personal pastoral support, academic support, student administration support, tutorial assistance, housing & accommodation assistance, scholarship & cadetship assistance.

As a result of the work of Nura Gili, the average retention rate for Indigenous students over 8 faculties is 91.85% compared to 81.88% for other students.

UNSW receives external support for Indigenous programs, as well as a large range of fully supported scholarships for Indigenous students at UNSW from companies, individuals and foundations. Currently UNSW offers 19 scholarships for Indigenous students at UNSW.

David Phillips Field Redevelopment Fund

Funds are being sought for the David Phillips Field redevelopment. Located in Daceyville, the redeveloped grounds include a new synthetic hockey pitch, a multi-use soccer pitch and four tennis courts. There are also three grass fields which will be used by rugby, football, baseball, ultimate frisbee and touch football in winter and cricket in summer.

The outdoor cricket practice facilities have also been upgraded and there are two new clubhouse buildings with function rooms and a kiosk. The project incorporates the latest in environmentally sustainable systems, including solar hot water and storm-water harvesting.

Together with UNSW sporting clubs, the grounds will also be used by UNSW Sport and Recreation for its comprehensive school sport programs. The facilities will also be available for hire by community and sports groups.

Basser College Scholarship Fund

UNSW is committed to providing the highest standard of tertiary education to all, and has a number of programs in place to encourage entries from students with an indigenous, rural or low socio-economic background.

Moving from home to Sydney and a University of 45,000 students can be a daunting prospect for many and particularly students from these groups. They are often a long way from their own family in a very new and challenging environment. Membership of a college community is particularly beneficial to them in giving a strong support network and a sense of belonging.

To enable these students to develop at UNSW, we would like to offer a number of full and part scholarships. Up to 10 rooms in Basser College will be set aside for this scholarship program. Scholarships will be provided for a student for 2 years, which is the average time that people spend in colleges.

Please consider a donation.

The UNSW Orchestra and Wind Band

The UNSW Orchestra and the UNSW Wind Band are the two Large Instrumental Music Ensembles (LIME) on the university campus. They are community ensembles, drawing their student players from every faculty of the university. UNSW staff and UNSW alumni are also welcome to join as players.

The Orchestra and the Wind Band are grateful to donors, whose generosity makes possible the enrichment of community music-making at the university. Donors’ funds are used for such purposes as: purchase of some of the more uncommon musical instruments for loan to students who cannot afford to own their own instruments, purchase of musical scores, and securing the viability of the ensembles into the future.

Activities of the LIME may be followed on their website www.orchestra.unsw.edu.au
